qBittorent slows down download speed

Post by venomdog »

I also use other clients like uTorrent etc but they don't eat up bandwidth. qBittorent even when I am not downloading anything and just using it to search torrents, eats away my internet completely. every thing loads slowly.
Any idea whats wrong? I also found that this issue was not present in earlier version I am using qBittorent since version 2, it is the best client, but this problem is very annoying, I have to close qbittorent to restore internet back. even though I have less seeders and download speed is less 150 kbps I still have slow internet issue.
My downalod speed is 8 Mbps and upload is 1 Mbps.

I am on windows 7 64 bit.

It could be related to the use of DHT in new qBittorrent versions.
Try what's described under point #1 here:

Since you come from version 2 utp might not be enabled by default. Enable it in preferences/speed

could be some bug with the search threads or as tomato said DHT
are you sure that all the torrents are STOPPED and not paused/seeding

Thanks for your replies.
I am on win 7 and that patching I did my research seems like its not needed for Win 7.
Yes my uTp is enabled.
No my torrent seeds fine and I prefer qbittorrent but it makes my internet slow even though there are not much downloading going on. I am wondering about setting in qbittorent called as Global Maximum number of connections and Maximum number of connections per torrent in Connection limits settings. Does that has something to do with my issue?

It depends.
That can kill a router easily, but if you don't have any torrents running, there are no connections.

So that setting will only take effect if you have torrents running. (And of course your computer will make some connections for DHT too.)
What is a sane setting? The defaults are quite good, but it all depends on your router.

Try turning those numbers lower and lower until everything works fine.
(You can also open uTorrent and see the numbers there. They got the same name, effect, etc.)

To be sure, just run TCP-Z and check if there's a limit, and what it's set to (under the "Patch" tab).
..Simply doing this won't modify anything on your system.
If the limit is anything below 100, I would change it to a greater value.

Nevermind the theoretical technicalities from people claiming that it won't do anything usefull..
Patching tcpip.sys works, because I've experienced it first hand on many systems!
The symptoms from having a low connection limit fits your description perfectly.

And patching won't do any harm. People been using it since years...
So feel free to use it. (I used it on my XP machines all the time.)

Also, you might be surprised about the way DHT actually works.
..at least I was.
It creates a lot of connections, and simply unchecking it under qBittorrent's settings might not have the effect that you think.
Dayman was kind enough to explain things in this thread:
http://qbforums.shiki.hu/index.php?topic=1713.0
..and I wrote a guide there on how to truly disable DHT (last post).
