qbittorrent suddenly DOA, all torrents permanently stalled/queued

Post by NoClue2 »

Apologies for my noob, nontech level of knowledge. Suddenly my qbittorrent is no longer working on my old laptop. I torrent thru a vpn on an old Win7 x86 laptop dedicated solely to running qbittorrent and nothing else.

Everything was fine three weeks ago when I shut the machine down because of a work emergency. about a week ago, the emergency over, I turned it backon again, and qbittorrent was unexpectedly DOA right at startup even though it had been working fine two weeks previously at shutdown. All torrents were stalled, and I noticed that on the General tab, in the Reannounce field, every single one offerred the very strange timetable of "68y 35d". WTH? 68 freaking years?

After fruitless experiments with manually rechecking/reannouncing I threw up my hands, uninstalled, and installed the current version. Everything seemed good. I added a couple of new torrents and they downloaded, and a few of my old ones began downloading too. But after the new torrents were finished, everything else zeroed out again. Thinking that it was simply because the older torrents had lost their seeds, I shrugged and shut the machine down for the night. But when I turned it back on again, same problem. In order to test it I added some known good torrents, and sure enough, all DOA. So I reinstalled again, to no avail. As soon as the reinstall was over, I added more known good torrents with no luck. Everything was stalled and all "Reannounce" fields included the old "68y 35d" timetable.

So I went nuclear. Thinking maybe it had something to do the the current version--I don't remember whether or not I was current three weeks ago when everything was OK, but I might have been--I went nuclear and uninstalled everything, deleting all torrents and configuration, then installed an older version, 4.2.1. Qbittorrent is still DOA, although it did exhibit a different variation on previous behavior. I added back in all the torrents I'd previously had and added a new one (definitely good, hundreds of seeds) and the first three stalled but all the rest queued.

And there they stay. I can force resume, I can recheck, I can reannounce, but no matter what I do, the torrent will change status for a second and then go back to Resume status.

In case anyone's wondering:
1. I tried toggling UPNP off. Didn't make any difference. (And if turning off UPNP means I have to mess around with the router, then forget it. I'm in a living situation where I don't have control nor even access over the router, so that's not an option.
2. Also created exceptions in my AV, Avast, both for ransomeware feature and for even just normal scanning. So Avast shouldn't be touching it at all anymore. Still no luck.

Any help would be welcome before I jump ship and try pico or Deluge. Below is the log from first startup, with all the old torrent re-adds omitted (just first one retained).

OK, guess not. I tried Picotorrent and it's working fine, so I'll be bidding qbittorrent goodbye. No thanks to the (non)folks on this forum.

Well, Windows 7 is end of life, it's hard to guess what exactly went wrong. Maybe something with the OS itself? No one knows. Wiping all qBittorrent related config folders might have fixed it. We don't know. Glad you found an alternative though - I still recommend upgrading that OS, or just switching to Linux.
