Use of uTP (Micro Transport Protocol)

Post by Silizium »

Hello,
in which situation is it recommended to use uTP? I don't really understand this protocol and would like to get a glimpse about it.

well, the official article is probably the best:
https://www.bittorrent.org/beps/bep_0029.html (it's a good read, short too)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Transport_Protocol

Basically, it tries to self-regulate so the traffic does not slow down even with max speeds and stuff.
It just works. So it should be used practically all the time? There are really no downsides to it IMO.
Some super hardcore seeders swear by only TCP, but they use servers with 10 HDD RAID arrays, 1gbps (or faster) connection, etc. And they connect to an enterprise router/switch. So in their case, when they want to squeeze every last drop out of their connection, TCP might be beneficial, as the PC is super fast, the connection is fast, router is super fast, etc.

But for any other person, connection, I'd just recommend uTP.

Thanks Peter,
would you recommend uTP only or TCP and uTP? Lets say for people with 5mB/sec average.
