[WIN] Where are the .torrent files?
« on: July 23, 2010, 10:04:19 PM »
I delete a torrent in the UI and I check the box to delete the files from the hard drive. Then I shut down qBittorrent. I open it again and the deleted torrents begin downloading again and new folders appear where the deleted files were. I cannot find the .torrent files anywhere on my system, but obviously they are not being deleted. This is truly annoying.

Hi,

There are saved at C:/Users/YOUR_USER/AppData/Local/qBittorrent/BT_backup

Please update to v2.3.0rc9 and see if it works better:

Thanks for the reply. But the torrent files there do not have their proper names so I don't know which ones to delete manually. Also, how come deleting the torrents and files through the UI doesn't work?

It normally works. What browser are you using?

The names used in the BT_Backup folder are the torrent info hashes. They are displayed in the GUI under the General properties panel ("Torrent hash").

Have you tried v2.3.0rc9?

I use Firefox. Why would it make a difference what browser I use?

I haven't. Should I?

Edited to add: Whoops, sorry, you mentioned upgrading to 2.3.0 above and I missed it. Thanks again.

You said you had issues with the Web UI. The Web UI's behavior may change from one browser to another. But if you're using Firefox, this is obviously not the issue.

No, not the web UI, just the regular UI. Meaning, I had deleted the torrent through qBittorrent (Edit >> Delete) as opposed to manually deleting it through Windows file manager or whatever it's called.

Oh, the GUI. Sorry, I misread your text.

By the way, I have been stress testing qBittorrent v2.3.0rc9 on Windows 7 32bits for the last 30 minutes and it works fine. Torrent are deleted just fine. Upon restart, they don't reappear.

What version of Windows are you using? What language/encoding is it using? Do you have any particular protection that may prevent qBittorrent from removing hard disk files? Does the BT_Backup have any particular permissions settings?

At the moment, I have exactly no idea of what could be going wrong with qBittorrent on your system.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit. I don't know about the language/encoding. English, I assume. Not sure what encoding means in this context.

I notice that the .torrent files themselves are read-only. I did not set them that way. (I didn't even know where they were before this.) I have no problem deleting them myself, manually. But it looks like qBittorrent must not have the right permissions to delete those files. Maybe I've modified some global permissions setting somewhere along the line that determines what sorts of apps have what permissions. Still, this doesn't happen with other torrent clients I've used on this same system.

Is there a way to change the default location of where the .torrent files go?

Edited to add: Just thought I'd mention that I'm pretty sure that qB doesn't have trouble deleting the files themselves (not the .torrent files but the actual files I am downloading), which are in another location. But when I restart, they are created anew. Whereas the .torrent files were not being deleted at all.

Oh, so this is a permission problem. Now, I will check qBittorrent's code to see if something could alter file permissions.

I think I might know what is causing it. I have committed a fix and I will ask the Windows packager to package it for you to test.

Note that you will need to restore the file permissions manually at first (or simply delete the whole qBittorrent folder in AppDataLocal.

Ok, thank you. Could you please explain exactly what I need to do? Download and install the new version you mentioned earlier? And what did you mean about deleting that folder? I have active torrents at the moment. Thanks.

Edited to add: I should mention that I'm not looking to compile from source or install any version described as "unstable." I don't mean to be difficult. I'm just a typical Windows user, I guess. :-)

1. Close qBittorrent
2. Go to C:usersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDatalocalqBittorrent to C:usersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDatalocalqBittorrent and reset the permissions. It should be available from right-click menu somewhere.
3. Install qBittorrent v2.3.0rc10 (when it is available for Windows, should be soon)
4. Run qBittorrent

Ok, thank you. Note, however, that the permissions issue is not specific to the qBittorrent folder on that path, nor indeed to the BT_backup folder. Specifically, each individual .torrent file is set to read-only. But those .fastresume files that also reside there are not read-only and qB is able to delete those.
