Missing top menu bar Ubuntu 14.04
« on: August 09, 2017, 06:06:00 pm »
On Ubuntu 14.04 I started running out of space on a drive that I was downloading to. I stopped Qb and moved some goodies to free up space. I launched Qb 3.3.15 the same that I've been using for months. No menu bar? Just icons. So I completely un-installed Qb with "purge" option. I re-installed with "sudo apt install qbittorrent" Launched still no top menu bar. After hacking at it for a while and still no joy. I switched to root and launched from terminal..viola! The correct interface with top menu bar and all. But of course it all does not work right while running as root(launching downloads..etc)

Does anybody know how I can get my groove back? Why does it launch correctly as root and not as regular user? Strange all this happened just do to lack of storage..BUGGAH!

Help!!!

Maybe it's the user settings?
It can be found here: ~/.config/qBittorrent/

Rename the folder and check it.

Peter,
Thanks for replying. I stated I used the "purge" option but did not provide the complete syntax: "sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove qbittorrent" that will delete configuration and/or data files of qbittorrent and it's dependencies. So instead of renaming I had completely removed it...no joy. I did rename it as you suggested and watched Qb regenerate it..no joy.

Check out the pics I attached you can see how it looks launched as User and Root. Whats strange is I have made zero changes, Qb has been running/launching/receiving updates like a champ. I start to run out of storage and it borked...wtf?

Okay, another tip: Press ALT + V, and select Top Bar.
Or just press Alt once and you should find the option in there.

Let's see if this works...

Tried....no joy. I did learn I can close the app with alt-f4! After just randomly trying alt-whatever
what I'm not really getting is complete removing /purging...reinstall and its borked!!

I've really only found a handfull of things to try on the Net. Searching here..found nothing? Strange...

Hello,

Having the exact same problem and damn, did not see this post before and made a search but there is no solution here either.

I did not delete the config files but i can not see an option to enable the menu bar.

It is absolutely incredible nobody else here has this problem.

I am using xfce desktop.

Shoot me, but it looks like Root and the User has a different look for Qt.
What if you try to change that?

So in my case, I used Xubuntu 17.04 and the PPA. I reckon the PPA might miss a few dependencies, but this can be easily fixed.
Simply install the "Breeze" package.

sudo apt install breeze

This will install all necessary looks and whatnot. Took me 250meg installation space only.
(More installed packages will not make your system slower.)

Let me know if this works.

I must use Ubuntu 14.04 for technical reasons whereby the 17.04 ppa eould not work for me.

In any case the way i solved the issue was to downgrade to v3.1.8 or to put it another way, simply use the native 14.4 stock repo.

.......and if you really want the latest version then go straight to windows version and download and install the .exe file using wine. Both these options worked for me.

You must first install wine using synapttic  for example.

Hope this helps anyone having same issue.

All the best.

Wait @atx.
Maybe you miss the Qt5 looks and that's why you don't have the menu. That is why I recommended Breeze.

I will try to install an Ubuntu 14.04 - but Hyper-V is PURE PAIN let me tell you. There is literally no 3D acceleration and it's like using "vesa" on Linux. (i.e.: a pain.)

Peter,
Tried installing breeze:
sudo apt install breeze
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package breeze

Are you sure it's "breeze" ?

ATX,
You know I'm feeling your pain. I'm still not understanding how running out of storage borked this app in the first place? Then the issue is exacerbated by completely removing, uninstalling, purging, deleting configs and reinstalling.....still borked  WTF!!!

So I'm sorry you're locked to 14.04. My solution is to upgrade OS, maybe Mint 18.2 and reinstall. The  problem with this solution is, if it ever happens again I still have no fix...

I'm not giving up it's just that I've spent too much time in trying to FIX it. I could have spun up a new distro or 2 or 3 in the time I've spent on this. This is also an indication of why Linux isn't mainstream. I am an advanced user with years of experience. I know how to search for solutions and I'm on this forum. Two weeks later the app is still broken. I live in San Antonio, TX and there's a heavy storm brewing, perfect day to stay indoors and upgrade.

I do have another machine with Mint 18.2 and qbittorrent. Man it's running like a champ!

...Are you sure it's "breeze" ?

It is, but on Ubuntu 16.04.
As I said I have to deploy a new installation to test this out for you guys. Also, this issue is only a dependency problem, something is not getting installed (according to my hunch.)
I will now download 14.04 and try it out (it's a pain with no 3d accel).

Just to clarify.
1) You installed Ubuntu 14.04.
2) Added the PPA.
3) Installed the latest qBittorrent.

Is that correct?

So I installed it on Ubuntu 14.04, added PPA, and I have top menu... very weird.
Also I was wrong about deps, that may be a thing on the latest 17.04, but the two packages (official + ppa) share the same deps.

Maybe you missed because of how Unity works?
You can disable this behaviour. See here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/861781/disable-title-bar-in-non-full-window-mode-in-unity-ubuntu-16-04
