Title: qBittorrent Discord server
Post by: Peter on March 20, 2018, 07:57:09 PM
So, as a new medium, I have launched a new Discord server. I know we had and still have an IRC, but it's usually pretty empty. Discord seems to be the modern IRC at the moment. So who knows, maybe it will be real popular. We will see.

Who can join?
Anyone, of course.

Why have one more place?
Most Discord folks are on plenty of servers, so +1 or -1 really does not matter. And who use it, it's the easiest solution.

What happens if it does not take off?
Well, I will just delete the server, it's fine.

Sorry about that, happens all the time. Even though I set "link never expire." Please use the new link in OP or the one that Bloodcore posted. (thank you for the quick response)

Thank you for updating the link!
May I ask of what use the Discord will be? I mean, along the issue page on GitHub and the forum, the Discord-server might be a good place to keep users updated about qBittorrent, but then again we have the forum, the website and GitHub. Just wondering, of course! I like the idea, yet I cannot find any real use for now.

Excellent question!

And, a hard to answer one. I feel that ...two things motivated my decision.
- IRC is very good and can be even self-hosted. Open source communities also love it. But, for some reason, our IRC never took off. And, even very old ones only have 1-2 active folks around usually. Discord combines IRC with a searchable history, so even people who are not experts on IRC (and can run bouncer, etc) can use it, can read back.
- I feel like today, as much as I hate segregation, the more platform a service, community or whatever covers, the more people it can reach. Because some folks prefer forums, some prefer IRC, some... you get the idea.

That said, I am not a 100% Discord advocate. I would side with RMS instead of advocating a service ran by a Chinese multi-billionaire company(Tencent). But, until someone comes along and writes an open-source implementation, I guess we will just have to deal with the devil.

I mean, it's not so bad at the moment:

Lovely people, have you heard about Telegram (https://telegram.org/)?

yeah, I am in several groups on it, but to me, Telegram groups feel very underpowered compared to Discord.
I mean, on one hand, Terrorist groups trust Telegram, so that must mean something.... but still, Discord only requires a user and password (no personal data like phone number), so I kinda prefer it. Discord is more like a rich IRC experience, while Telegram is like WhatsApp really. I do my personal and business talks 100% on Telegram, it's a great software. Just group chats are messy.

Yeah, that means it's private and secure, but i don't think that will be the case for terrorist anymore https://themoscowtimes.com/news/telegram-to-turn-over-terror-suspects-data-under-new-privacy-policy-62696 (https://themoscowtimes.com/news/telegram-to-turn-over-terror-suspects-data-under-new-privacy-policy-62696). I've tried Discord and yeah, it's pretty nice and tidy. Telegram groups -with the right administration- can be pretty orderly fashioned: https://telegram.org/blog/admin-revolution (https://telegram.org/blog/admin-revolution)
