Windows Portable

Post by LeshaRB »

Can you make a normal portable version? Moreover, qbittorrent supports it!
You tell me.

It's work

Code: Select all

FEATURE: Enable portable mode if "profile" directory exists (Tester798)
Yes, this one works!

But there is a problem with updates !!!!

For example, the update qbittorrent_4.4.0beta2_x64_setup.exe was released for my beta1

How can I get new files from there?
Ordinary archivers are powerless here = (

And every time I have to perform the following actions when updating

1) Download new version
2) Install it to c: \ Program Files \ qBittorrent \
3) Copy files to qBittorrent portable folder
4) Uninstall the qBittorrent program

These are unnecessary actions that are very unnerving!

You are right.

This program is really really annoying.

If this program has portable mode, why not give us a portable program ?

Install & uninstall to get the portable program ?

Or the author is happy with user install & uninstall ?

Why not just move over the "profile" to the new exe files? It should work / it should upgrade flawless.

UPDATE: I just tried to upgrade from 4.3.6 to 4.3.7 while using portable mode like such https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorr ... de#windows and it worked great. No issues, settings stayed, etc.

This smells like PEBKAC.

I downloaded qbittorrent_4.3.7_x64_setup.exe

How to extract files without installation?

I used 7-zip. Right click, extract here. Works like a charm.

Download 7-zip from here:
https://www.7-zip.org/a/7z1900-x64.exe

Extract 7z1900-x64 to anywhere you like and you will find 7zFM.exe.

Run 7zFM.exe, this will bring you a 7-zip GUI.

Locate qbittorrent_4.3.7_x64_setup.exe and you will see qbittorrent.exe & qbittorrent.pbd.

Just extract those 2 files. Done.

Basically, if you use 7-zip command line 7z.exe to extract qbittorrent_4.3.7_x64_setup.exe, 7-zip will tell you that he can't recognize the file.

I use WinRar
Ok I'll try 7zip

But I think it would be much easier if you made a ready-made archive right away

And not these dances with a tambourine

I mean, it's like 0.00000001% of the userbase who wishes to use this method.
I am not saying its an invalid use case (who am I to judge), but if they wish to do so, using an open-source and literally free archiver should not be a big issue IMO.

Imagine the other side. What if there were archives made available and regular users grabbed those. They couldn't update, it'd mess up their installation, they couldn't figure out how to run it, wtf to do with it, etc. It'd cause way more headache to just make .zip archives for example, than have this extra step IMO.
