What do the numbers in parenthesis next to seeds and peers mean?

I always see 6(5) in seeds and peers. Whatever the number, there are parenthesis around them. What does that mean?
Re: What do the numbers in parenthesis next to seeds and peers mean?
"6" - connected peers
"(5)" - available peers (estimated/reported by tracker)
"(5)" - available peers (estimated/reported by tracker)

The available as estimated by trackers thing does not seem to match what I am seeing:
I have 100s in parenthesis -- and considerably less adding all the peers together.
Is it possibly a track record of how many have *ever* been in the swarm?
