Downloading torrents kill my internet?

Post by dragons4life »

Most of the times i download torrents, my internet "dies" in a sense were i can't use a web browser, can't browse google.com or any website, it simply says:
"This webpage is not available"

Now i will understand if the torrent/download is taking all my internet download speed, but it's only using 1MB or 800 KB

My Global Speed Limit is:  1500 KB but even lowering down, does't fix the problem.

Did a testmy.net speed test for both up and down
15MB Down 5MB Up

So is there a reason as to why this is happening?

Version??
Operating System??

Reduce the half open connections and the connections per torrent.
15MB Down 5MB Up
I think you will find that it is;

15Mb Down 5Mb Up

b == bits

B == Bytes.

Latest Version?  V.3.1.11
Windows 8.1
Can you explain this/tell me what this is a little better? "Reduce the half open connections and the connections per torrent."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP_half-open

The setting is found in Options -> Advanced  set it to less than 20

Connections per torrent are found in Options -> Connection  just how many you need depends entirely on what kind of jobs you run but the default is WAY above what the average user would need.

Either me opening the ports on my router fixed it, or lowering it to 20.

But i think it was due to me opening the ports since i put it back to 50 again, and nothing happens, even if i am downloading at 2.0MB, anyways thank you.

i might reply to this same post if i run into any trouble again today.

It still does kill my internet, i even upgraded my internet to 50mbps = 6 MBps?
Downloading at 2MB = Internet Dies and can't use Chrome.

I am guessing is my router? D-LINK DIR-655 or maybe my modem? witch i will get a new one probably this week.

Just asking again, in case there is another solution.

And what settings have you tried changing??

The DIR-655 is an older router with a max throughput of about 250mb/s, which is plenty for what we're talking about. But a few sites of people saying to limit the global connections to 100-200. Another site mentioned that the router tends not to do as well with UDP states. uTP uses UDP, so you may need to set it a bit lower. Start low, if it helps, work  your way up until it breaks, then back off, probably cut in half. Assuming this actually helps.

Above, it was recommended to reduce the half-connections, so that's already been addressed. Some routers can only handle creating so many new connections at the same time.

Disabled DHT made it for a few, than it started happen again.
Funny thing is that i was downloading at around 6MB without lagging and using Browser and playing games.
I might just wait till tomorrow to get my new modem and see if it still keeps happening.

Also tried this right now and it seem to worked.

Thank you this website was really good, and i was doing research about routers and witch one i can get for cheap, problably gonna end up buying a TP-LINK TL-WDR3500.

I was also going to install DD-WRT to it, but don't know how that works or if it's worth it.

Don't buy one because it is 'cheap', ... Buy the best one you can for your budget.

Hi dragons4life, I suspect your modem is not the problem. If you do not need wireless 5 GHz then I recommend this router. http://www.amazon.com/RT-N16-Wireless-N ... B00387G6R8 running Tomato either Toastman or Shibby builds. I use Toastman builds. This router has allot of bang for the buck. It has 128 MB of memory and runs a Broadcom processor. I suggest routers with Broadcom processors because you can run Tomato. Check the specs here http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16.

I used to run DD-WRT which does support both Broadcom and Atheros but once I tried Tomato, I never looked back. If you have the money and really need 5 GHz wireless then look at this one. http://www.amazon.com/RT-N66U-Dual-Band ... B006QB1RPY. There are newer models from Asus but they are pricey like this one. http://www.amazon.com/RT-AC68U-Wireless ... B00FB45SI4

BTW the TL-WDR3500 runs Atheros so you will have to use DD-WRT. I am not saying it is not a good router. However I have found with any unit, the factory firmware sucks. Just my opinion...

Thank you, i just got my new router ( i tough it was a new modem ) from ISP company, it feels like it sucks, and i wan't to replace it ASAP.

Honestly have 50 bucks to spare on a router, right now.

However with this new router, the problem is fixed.

Also kind of weird how the Firewall now told me to unlock/allow qbittorrent.
