Do you think qBittorrent's UI needs considerable improvement?

I replaced the original icons by new icons from two different icon sets that were free to use (credits added, though). No worries, the sets fit together perfectly - I think.

This is really great. However, I think the completed, paused, active and inactive icons on the sidebar need to be re-done. They look rather brand and mismatched compared to the new icons you made.

As you can see, some icons still need to be replaced since there was no alternative in both the icon sets. I'll try to replace those with appropriate ones if I can find them and they fit the other icons

They are really nice, however i think it´s not a good idea to use a calendar icon for the log, and an equalizer icon for preferences, that is misleading...

+1 to that, also the upload icon, and share ratio

For the firewalled maybe combine the connected icon with an exclamation in the center

I noticed that the speedometer is cutted up and down, it needs to be smaller...

The go-up and go-down are for the queue sorting, and i think is not wise to use the same icons as the download and upload ones, that is misleading, maybe an arrow without tail, or maybe a mayor and minor symbols, (rotated 90º)

What about dropping the folder icons and use the system ones as sledgehammer did a long time ago? it may disrupt the aesthetics maybe not, not sure on that one

The splash screen needs a redesign, something with more transparencies like the adobe products, or maybe just remove it altogether

This are my opinions nothing more, i think that so far it´s a great work and a big improvement for the end user

EDIT: Putting help text on the search textboxes, (i´m talking about the grayed out text that disappears when clicked), would be great for new users, what about "Search in transferlist" for the main view and "Search the web" for the search tab?

I am looking at icon sets that are "grey" atm. I think this kind of colorstyle will fit perfectly with any version of Windows.
Examples of what I mean(random but they show the artstyle I am looking for):
1. http://brankic1979.com/icons/
2. http://adamwhitcroft.com/batch/
3. http://jospinoj.deviantart.com/art/minicons-292943928
4. http://www.pyconic.com/pyconic-icons-free/

This is why qB needs a simple theming system

You may use this icon set for both personal and commercial use, which means this resource can be used in any project without worrying about licensing.
But you may NOT distribute our icon set elsewhere without our consent.
No.
sledgehammer_999 wrote: 2. http://adamwhitcroft.com/batch/
You are free to use Batch (the "icon set") or any part thereof (the "icons") in any personal, open-source or commercial work without obligation of payment (monetary or otherwise) or attribution. Do not sell the icon set, host the icon set or rent the icon set (either in existing or modified form).
No.
Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0). Ok

Yeah don't worry. I was giving an example about the artstyle. I wasn't seriously considering those exacts ones.

Although the first 2 I think they mean "don't redistribute the icon set as an icon set but it is ok if you do it as a part of your project"

I like that you're going flat and monochrome, but flat  and monochrome icons only really work if you are doing a whole re-designed Metro client for Windows 8, and those fullscreen apps just don't work well with a torrent client that you want just running in the background on your desktop.

I hope somebody reading this thread has a background in software design and can re-imagine the client for us.

don't change a thing guy's... I'll be super pissed !!! only suggestion I would have is I wish there was a "black" or negative theme so I can set it to black background, white text... night/stealth mode.

and thank you for your client

Well, considering that all ads are removable in several clicks and that other client can also work with large torrents (when qbittorrent can't) and it also fits windows UI properly, I might as well do that. The only thing I will be missing is folder tree in files section.
No one talks about futuristic UI. People need UI that fits native Windows one so that qBittorrent doesn't look like time-traveler from linux of early 2000s.

Image
(yes, i'm running utorrent right now because it can handle 1.25 TiB torrent with 7 MiB .torrent file)

Is it wrong to ask for something that looks at least as decent as that other client? For me it's obvious that UI needs a massive overhaul in terms of appearance (composition of elements is completely fine).

Thanks for the suggestions (I'm not in charge of the UI), but let me note something.
You are making suggestions related to design, while you use Windows 8.

Is that correct?
(I mean, there is literally no design involved in 8. They threw out everything they had.
I do agree on most of the points. But 2013... and using 8? Are you on a tablet?)

@Butter: Suggestions does not mean the UI will be completely destroyed/changed up just because.
We have a maintainer in charge for a reason. So don't worry.
(Suggestions are more than welcome, and they do drive products forward. But they don't always get implemented 1:1.)

Ps.: To me, 1.6.1's UI was the most minimal yet most usable. But I'm even fine with 3.2.1 builds. 3.3 went overboard. (Gotta be hip n' cool for 'em teenagers.)
Okay, they went overboard both with ads and design. :/

I don't use metro UI at all and I never see it.

Desktop interface of Windows 8 looks way better than Windows 7 and has some functional improvements like Task Manager and customizable toolbar in Windows Explorer. I don't want to see Aero with its rounded edges and blurry transparencies after that.

Without further derailing the thread... (yepp, just doing that right now... I'm terrible at this, sorry)
Microsoft went full retard. They have a flat 'design' now. Without the need of any 3D acceleration on the desktop.
Yet they made DWM always-on, and half of the colors for the frame are not even readable. (You can't change title text color AFAIK.)

Heck, there was transparency that could be used to make beautiful themes. And now we have bland colored titles. Like a children's plastic toy.
Bonus point: The frame is XBOX HUEG. Like... look at that waste. (It kinda looks like Google+ did not that long ago. #whitespace)

Sorry for ranting. I like design, and I like beautiful things. So Windows 8 really makes me rage every time I see it / use it.
But all is well. Ballmer finally running away, the stocks are going up, hope is finally on the horizon. We will have a desktop OS gentlemen. (I knew I won't have to switch to Linux when 2020 arrives.)

Ps.: Now I remember... I wanted to install an auto-save and a spoiler mod...brb

Compared to Windows 7, your complaints about Windows 8 is just nitpicking.

For example, things that make my jimmies rustle every time I use Windows 7:
Start button. Especially the way orb almost touch edges of the taskbar.
TItle bar, taskbar and start menu transparency and it's pattern.
Combo boxes.
Buttons.
Lame non-removable toolbar in Explorer.
Close, maximize and minimize buttons.

Basically, everything in Windows 7 has this annoying glassiness and rounded edges which make me hate it after minimalism of Windows 8.

However, the minimalism of Windows 8 is too... big :) They went from one extreme point to another; nothing in the middle. What interface design in Windows 8? There is no such thing. It looks like drawing of a child in first grade.
