Using VPN when downloading torrents?

Possibly a silly question & likely asked before but for years I loaded my VPN on boot but found this really impacted on using a NAS. I then went to only loading the VPN when using Firefox as many sites are blocked (Australia).
My question is this:
"Is it okay to download torrents without the VPN"

Downloading VPN always depends on two things.
- Where do you download from? Private trackers will be always SO MUCH safer. (most anti p2p companies target public swarms)
- What are your countries laws regarding p2p? I've tried to search but yea I don't know AUS websites. Try to look for local sites, reddits, whatnot. See what people say. I mean, it will never be "legal" because you are sharing copyrighted material to others users while/after downloading. But some countries just tolerate it.
