What does "Save Resume Data Interval" do?

What does Save Resume Data Interval (SaveResumeDataInterval) do?
What is the default?

Default: 60 min
I have no info on the actual implementation, but as far as I can tell it just writes out the current state of things. Like the present torrent state and such.
