what is the status of updatable torrents?

Post by flartedpeas »

I was curious about the status of support for updatable or mutable torrents, I was looking through the libtorrent website and it looks like there is some support for BEP 39 and mutable torrents but I am not sure if I am reading it right, and I havent seen a client or torrent that is updatable so I guess its not there yet. it looks like people have been talking about updatable torrents for years but will it ever happen?

well, I suppose libtorrent-rasterbar ( https://github.com/arvidn/libtorrent | http://libtorrent.org ) has to support it first. it's maybe present already ( see this ticket: https://github.com/arvidn/libtorrent/issues/4012 ). I can't find anything on the Github issue tracker though (for qBittorrent). so, not sure if it was ever planned, rejected officially, or what's the stance on it.

I have been doing some reading, it might be implemented in libtorrent, I see documentation for it but I don't think any clients actually make use of it. It looks like focus is being shifted towards the bittorrent v2 protocol which supports swarm merging and mutability better? I see an issue on github where libtorrentv2 is being worked on for qbittorrent but im not sure if mutability is on the todo list.
