I thought it may be that I needed the latest version of qbittorrent, but their msg shows "qbittorrent can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers."
This is weird because I never had this before & ran qbittorrent without any issues.
I also never changed any security settings!
Mac Mavericks latest o/s update patches, cause qbittorrent 3.1.3 not to work

I'm not a Mac user, but for the record, here are the steps if you have this issue, as I read them and shortened them from another source:
At least three methods (easiest and most secure first):
(1) Ctrl-click/right-click the app and choose OPEN from the Context Menu, then you'll get a security warning that let's you select OPEN again to bypass the security; or
(2) Run the terminal command: % xattr -d com.apple.quarantine YourApp.app
(3) Disable this "Gatekeeper" feature (lowers system security): * System Preferences > Security & Privacy > ‘General’ Tab * Change "Allow applications downloaded from..." to ANYWHERE.

Apparently applies to OS X Mountain Lion 10.7.5 +
