PSA: Maintenance notices / website updates

Post by Peter »

There was a recent server/host maintenance and there was a minor rollback.
If your post disappeared, I am terribly sorry - the rollback should have been minimal - around 5 minutes or less.
Other sites should be up and running normal.

Thanks for your understanding.

Ps.: If anyone is interested, OVH changed it's hosting just as 2018 came along, so that is why the change was necessary.
We have lost IPv6 (Cloudflare will deliver that until we get support), but we gained bandwidth. Hooray!

We will have another maintenance soon. It will take 1 hour at most. This only affects forum, the website will be up and running with almost no delay.
Thank you for your patience.

(This time I will toggle maintenance mode on for the forums, so if you see that, or 404, we are in maintenance.)

Postponed. Happy posting! :)

Maintenance soon, IPv6 will be back when the maintenance is done.
(The forum will go maintenance mode as well, to avoid lost posts and such.)

Maintenance done.
All services should be operational, up and running.
- IPv6 is back.
- Server, download and loading speeds boosted.
- HTTP/2 is enabled. That's why we had some minor outages just after I posted my message.

Mail server update

In the past, we have already used a third-party provider to have better delivery rates, called SendGrind. It had a 1$ plan - and it just worked. Sadly, they discontinued the plan.

So once the service was discontinued, I thought we will just send our own mail. It's not that hard... or is it?
Few users have complained that the forum emails just won't arrive - or they arrive late. It was set up right, with the proper DNS records and all the fluff (checked with mail-checker and others). Nevertheless, Google and others still decided to randomly delay letters. Not cool.

Instead of wasting even more time and effort on the self-stack, I went out on a journey to find a new SMTP hosting... once again. This time, the choice was "Mailgun". Their interface looks clean, it works, and it also feels secure. (Not that we have too much to worry about the email contents). Enjoy! All mails should arrive pretty fast and without failures.

Turns out some mails were not delivered with Mailgun either as Hotmail-Outlook rejected their IP. After contacting support, they fixed the issue by moving us to new IP within a few hours.

There will be a maintenance on both sites today, I will be moving the forums and main site to a more secure place, so both will receive additional security measures.
Builds will be served out from a new place, and depending on bandwidth requirements, the site will use a CDN-like solution as well.

Either way, expect minor downtime, no breakages. Thank you.

(There is now GPDR as well in the EU.)

Website is up and running. (With only a 1 minute downtime, yay.)

Thanks for your patience. Builds is next.

Our SMTP broke for a while, as there was a new block on :25. Since :25 worked on any previous setting/place I kept using because it makes no sense whatsoever to mess with it, unless there are issues. Like just now. And of course, SMF has an error log, where it did not log anything about all this.

Either way, mail sending is back in action now.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

The site has been moved over to NGINX to make it more future-proof. In the past, we have migrated to Apache's newer versions which caused an only headache and instability.
With Nginx as it has, it's own official PPA/repo, we are golden.

The forum has received two new modules. ReCAPTCHA (register + first few posts) and the bad reputation addon.

Site maintenance will happen today - soon. Expect minor downtime. Nothing should change, but if you see the site break a bit for a short period of time, don't panic. :)

The site should be up, functional and be faster than ever. (qbittorrent.org)
IPv6 is still under maintenance/work.
